Yoga

Enso offers yoga classes from the Iyengar yoga tradition.

About Iyengar

Iyengar yoga is based on the teachings of living yoga master BKS Iyengar. The practice of Iyengar yoga emphasizes vigorous posture work, focusing on standing poses, which develop strength, vigor and concentration. The use of yoga props is emphasized to enhance learning and specific pose sequences are developed for general and therapeutic benefit. Included among the vast writings of Mr. Iyengar is the classic text Light on Yoga. First published in 1966, Light on Yoga is a breakthrough text that is to this day considered to be the authoritative manual for serious yoga students. Instructors

Jim Herbert (Enso Co-director, Yoga Instructor)

Jim has over 10 years combined experience in teaching Martial Arts and Yoga. After dabbling in karate as a youth, Jim re-discovered the way of karate as a young adult. His journey in karate led him to the path of yoga and the two together have brought him to his true calling of helping others explore the mystery of life. Jim has studied the art of teaching with numerous special mentors including Sensei M. Bambouyani, Gabriel Halpern of the Yoga Circle, and Miguel Latronica of Eight Limbs Yoga Center to name only a few. Jim’s passion for the arts is seen in his love of teaching families and children. Jim has 7 years experience in teaching karate to children of all ages and has compled his teacher training with Shakta Kaur Kalsa in “Giving Children the Gift of Yoga.” Jim promotes compassion, discipline and fun in his teaching style and feels that a qualified teacher is no more than a guide to help the student find their own path in the journey.

Patrina Dobish (Senior Yoga Instructor/Certified Iyengar Teacher)

Patrina began her studies of Iyengar Yoga in 1991 when, auspiciously, BKS Iyengar made an impromptu visit at Lincoln Park High School in Chicago. Having 12 prior years of dedicated yoga study, she was curious but intimidated by the physical focus of Iyengar's students. Ironically, at the time, yoga asana was put on her low priority list, because after asana practice she often felt worse. Her job as a union carpenter was hard and physical, and she craved relief from the toils of her day so her seated practices could continue with ease. Enter Iyengar: Coming back to Chicago after a 6-month stay in India, Patrina felt physically debilitated. Hearing about Iyengar's visit she went to the demonstration. "When I saw BKS Iyengar of that stage at Lincoln Park High School, I knew he was going after something more than physical beauty and prowess in his students. His demands made on the students that they work on their intelligence was as clear as day." In the coming months, Patrina took up her Iyengar yoga studies with Gabriel Halpern (Yoga Circle). Patrina now continues her studies with Gabriel and Lois Steinberg, along with visiting teachers, such as Manouso Manos and Francie Ricks. She's been to Pune, India, and has studied under the tutelage of Geeta and Prashant Iyengar.
