About Capoeira

Capoeira is one of the many cultural manifestations born in Brazil in the face of European colonization. It is an Afro-Brazilian martial art created by African slaves as a means to protect themselves from their oppressors, over 400 years ago. Capoeira is a vigorous art form with roots in the ceremonial dances of the Bantu people. Its elements of ritualized combat weave together in an intricate dialogue of movements combined with the aspects of dance, acrobatics, music, and self-defense. Capoeira transcends the barriers of age, gender, and ethnic background and it creates a strong sense of community.

Capoeira develops discipline, self-confidence, and helps open ones mind to another culture, giving a deeper world wide perspective.

Instrutor Bambú (Capoeira Instructor)

Instrutor Bambú is a graduated student of Mestre Barrão, recognized as one of the top 100 mestres of the 20th century. He has been training and teaching Capoeira since 1998. Bambú is a member of Grupo Axé Capoeira, one of the most highly recognized and prestigious Capoeira groups in the world. He has been traveling the world practicing, teaching, and performing Capoeira since the beginning of his training. Bambú now has the hopes to bring this beautiful art form to the city of Chicago and spread the philosophies of Grupo Axé Capoeira and Mestre Barrão.
